Basic philosophy of
Music Together®
1. All children are music.
2. Therefore, all children
can achieve basic music competence. The Center for Music and Young Children© of Princeton
defines basic music competence as
the ability to sing in tune with accurate rhythm.
3. The
participation and modelling of parents and caregivers, regardless of their
musical ability is essential to a child's musical growth.
4. This
growth is best achieved in a playful, developmentally appropriate,
non-performance oriented learning environment that is musically rich yet
immediately accessible to the child's and adult's participation.
At Music Together® you will find:
- Mixed-Age classes
- “Parent Education
Moments” during the class
- Variety in the tones
and rhythms in the songs
- Learning the different
musical modes (major, minor, dorian etc…)
- Guided free
improvisation
- Every child encouraged to
participate at his/her own level of development
- Guidance for adults for
music and movement activities

What is Music Together®?
Creative Music &
Movement Experiences for Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers...
...and the Grown-ups who love them!
Music Together® is a music education program for
young children. It originated as an educational project of the Center for
Music and Young Children® Princeton,
NJ, USA,
in 1987. A
Music Together® class is not a “music lesson”. It is not designed to create
young concert artists (though this may eventually happen!) It is a way for
families to make music with their children. Music Together® classes are based on the idea that making
music with children, family, and a community of families:
·
Enriches
the lives of children and adults and…
·
Promotes
musical growth in children, improving their musical skills and…
·
Should be FUN!
Experience Music Together® and find out how
important--and how fun--your role can be!
Our Music Together classes build on your child's
natural enthusiasm for music and movement. We'll help you provide your child
with the basic musical skills needed to enjoy school and social musical
activities, and to study an instrument should he or she choose to do so.

Why Music Together®? Why now?
Formal musical education cannot teach a child
to be musical, or find joy and inspiration in music. Musical predisposition
or intrinsic inclination to be musical for life is the result of good, happy
and positive musical experiences and a child’s association with music in
early childhood.
You are by far the most
important model for your child. Music Together® is committed to support and
facilitate your efforts to create a rich musical environment at home, thereby
encouraging the natural process of music growth of your child and ensuring
the realization of the child’s innate musical potential. Understanding the
musical development of children will make you appreciate how your child
responds to musical experiences and make the interaction between you more
interesting and profound. But what matters most is that it will inspire you
to give your child a variety of musical experiences to grow and share your
love of music and feed their emerging musical self.

What can Music Together® offer my family?
·Music Together®
classes will expand your musical repertoire. Each semester, you
will receive a CD of the new songs and the corresponding book. The music includes
traditional songs, original songs and rhythmic rhymes. The songs include various
shades, time and cultural styles exposing the child to a wide diversity of
musical elements.
· Music
Together® classes are a source of ideas on how to bring music into your life
every day in a spontaneous, fun and stimulating for your child. Not only will you be
capable of recreating most of the activities in class at home with your
family, but also discover that your creativity is stimulated and you will
always find new musical games to do with your child.
· Learn
the mechanisms of music education of your child. Better understand
the process by which your child can reach basic musical competency in the
early years of his, in a musically stimulating environment and with a
reference enthusiastic model (you!)

What are Music Together® classes like?
The classes have from 6 to 12
children accompanied by one (or both) parents or caregivers (au-pair,
grandparent, baby sitter ...). The Music Together®
teacher leads the class in songs, chants and rhythmic patterns that change
every semester. The songs are accompanied by activities that include:
·
Fun
and and games
·
Free
and expressive dance
·
Using
objects (scarves, balls ...)
·
Focus
on tonal and rhythmic elements of music
·
Small
and large movements
·
Playing
with instruments
·
Opportunity
to improvise with children and adults
Informative and fun “Parent Education Moments” during classes
enhance the understanding of the relevance of the activities taking place for
the musical development of the child. The
atmosphere invites and encourages the participation of children and parents
regardless of their musical talent and preparation. Parents who participate in Music Together® find that
playing music can become a crucial model for musical development of their
children and often see also see their own musicality bloom! It is crucial
that the parents who accompany the children to class each week actively
participate in the class as they serve as musical models for their children.
Each course consists of a 45 minute weekly lesson for 10
consecutive weeks. Music Together classes are non-sequential. Each of
the 9 collections offers new music, movements and song.

Why sing in English and Italian?
In early childhood, children have
the ability to recognize and store all types of sounds, regardless of what
language in which they occur. As
children grow, this capacity for language is drastically reduced. So
getting children’s ears used to the sound of two languages furthers their ability
to learn other languages in the future. The songs are mainly composed of
simple words and short phrases that are repeated several times in order to
facilitate learning. For parents this can be an opportunity to refresh
their language skills in a fun and informal situation!
